The Importance of Consistency and Practice in Basketball Success
Hello everybody. I’d like to share a story with you today. This story is about basketball, along with something bigger. Here, we’re referring to the Staten Island Basketball League (SIBL). It is I, Craig Raucher, who started this league in 1980.
I have led this league for more than 40 years. I am still playing basketball even after replacing both of my knees. This will be enough to show our members that pain and age cannot be excuses. I value both my family and personal growth. I likewise support charitable causes. I always provide priority to wellness and fitness.
Of course, I, Craig Raucher, had to face challenges. I have faced surgeries and injuries. But those were not enough to stop me from playing the game. I kept going. This is precisely what we teach in our league.

The Importance of Consistency and Practice in Basketball Success
Now, I will enter the core of this post. The entire journey of Craig Raucher proves one particular thing. It is possible to change everything through practice and consistency. Below, I have mentioned some points to explain the reason why.
-
Consistency Builds Muscle Memory
Your body will remember while practicing the same shot every day. For example, your legs will learn the right jump. Your arms will also learn the proper angle. We will begin from zero each time without consistency. Your game will become automatic when there is consistency. I, Craig Raucher, have seen players become top scorers despite missing almost every shot initially. They have done this by showing up thrice every week.
-
Consistency Teaches Mental Toughness
You might feel exhausted on some occasions. You might likewise miss ten shots in a row. I, Craig Raucher, have also undergone these bad times. But I practiced consistently. It helped me keep going anyway. It helped me develop mental toughness in my personal life as well. I have depicted this by playing the game consistently even after two knee replacements. It is something known as mental toughness.
-
Practice Turns Weaknesses into Strengths
Every person has some weaknesses while playing basketball. I, Craig Raucher, was also not an exception to this. It can be a bad move. It can likewise be a weak hand. Nevertheless, practicing this weakness for some time every day can become your strength. I have seen many players who could not dribble with their left hand. Nevertheless, they became unstoppable drivers in the long run. This can happen because of practice.
-
Practice Builds Team Chemistry
It is not possible to build trust in only one game. For this, one has to practice for a long time together. You will know exactly the position of your teammates while practicing consistently. You will learn their favorite pass as well as their speed. You will likewise learn their habits. Thus, your team will become stronger over time. The best teams in our league are those practicing together the most.
-
Consistency Reduces Injuries
Players practising randomly might get hurt. This is because their bodies are not prepared. However, your muscles and joints will learn how to adapt while practicing consistently. You will become more flexible. You will also become stronger. This is the reason why I, Craig Raucher, is still playing the game even after two knee surgeries. I have never stopped moving.
-
Consistency Creates Leaders
Every great basketball leader, including me, got there via consistent effort. It is impossible to lead if you show up only on several occasions. Individuals tend to follow those who are dependable. You become dependable while you practice consistently. In that case, others will look to you for guidance. This is the way in which a player can become a leader in the long run.
-
Practice Turns Goals into Habits
You can easily say, “I want to be a good shooter.” Nonetheless, a goal without practice is simply a wish. The goal will become a habit while practicing every week. You will not think about it anymore. You will simply perform it. One fine morning, you will realize that you have improved vastly. This is the strength of consistency.
